Calcium homeostasis - Once and for all.

Homeostasis: Blood Ca2+ level (10mg/100mL)

If there is too much Ca2+:

  • THYROID gland produces CALCITONIN
  • Calcitonin
    • Deposition into bone
    • Decreased absorption by kidneys

If there is too little Ca2+
  • PARATHYROID gland produces PARATHYROID HORMONE
  • Parathyroid hormone
    • Absorption from bone
    • Increased absorption from kidneys
    • Kidneys also activate Vitamin D
      • Vitamin D increases absorption from intestine
