Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Formation of thrombus in
  • Deep calf vein
  • Axillary vein

Clinical features
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Swelling of the limb
  • Redness of overlying
  • Pulmonary embolism

Investigations
  • Doppler ultrasound of the vein
  • Venography (intravenous contrast)

Management
  • Low molecular weight heparin or
  • Intravenous heparin
  • Warfarin
  • Bed rest
  • Graduated pressure stocking

Complications
  • Phlebitis
  • Venous eczema
